SOLD! “The Time Keeper’s Daughter” – 42×60 w/frame "Consider for a moment, the idea of “Heaven on earth”. Imagine if that phrase was literal, and perfectly articulated. When Ancient man looked up into the night sky is this what he saw? Was there a time when man lived in the presence of the Gods? Before the sky fell and the heavens tumbled into chaos as the gods went to war creating a cosmic darkness enshrouding the world. This is what the mythologies from cultures across the globe describe, but before this destruction, there was a collective voice that said man had indeed lived among the gods. A “Golden Age”…. but what did that mean? In the galaxy we call the milky way the earth moves with a small gathering of planets around a single star,… our sun. Stand anywhere on earth today and the planets seem like tiny specks in the sky. So the question remains, why did our ancestors view these small specks of light with such reverence and dread. I was inspired recently by a book written by Immanuel Velikovsky titled Worlds in Collision. A book in which he claimed the mythic gods were the personification of planets. He is recognized today for realizing patterns in the symbols and stories used by widely dispersed cultures around the globe. Remembered as immense powers in the sky, why did cultures around the globe celebrate the planets as the Gods? The myth makers were the builders of the first civilizations. How did the global themes of myth arise? The gods were visible powers unpredictable and frequently violent. Pictographs/images shared from all corners of the earth depict what is commonly known to be a “sun” as a large disc with a smaller disc squarely in the center often with rays flowing out, and yet a third darker circle superimposed in the center of that. The sun we see today looks nothing like this. How is it that so many different remote and wide spread cultures who most likely could not have been in contact with one another share a similar symbol? If these ancient writings were based on valid observation rather than fantasy this means that the sky we know today was very different than the sky of our ancient forefathers. Were the planets closer to earth in the past? “Heaven on Earth”? It is theorized that the planets were arranged from earth in a co-linear way which means that they were lined up as they traveled through space. For the people on earth the result was a unified configuration in the sky visually dominated by a large glowing planet at the polar axis theorized to have been Saturn, visible minus its ring system. The other two planets believed to be visible from earth is Venus and Mars, with Venus in the middle shining bright, and Mars, the red planet in front of Venus, the “apple of her eye”. The configuration was visible at the polar axis and did not rise or set which means there was for a time an everlasting purple type haze upon the earth. When time stood still. Shared similarly in cultures from the Eastern and Western hemisphere, the planet Saturn was referred to as the primeval sun, the motionless sun, superior sun, the First in line of Kings. Over time, as the sun we know today began to move into our galactic orbit a silhouette emerged on the surface of Saturn and day and night was created, (“let there be light”). Saturn or the Greek Kronos was the keeper of time, but how does an inconspicuous planet such as Saturn justify such reverence in the ancient world?With the creation of day and night the ancients experienced seasons and therefore an abundant harvest. This was said to be the “Golden Age” of Saturn/Kronos. All the gods have a light and dark aspect… the good and the bad. Saturn/Kronos was the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. The story told before Saturn moved to his current position in the sky was a story of Harvest during a “Golden Age” and Doomsday when the planets went to war and Saturn/Kronos was cast out. Hestia, goddess of the hearth and home is said to be the gentlest and mildest of Kronos’ Daughters. I believe this is the archetype for the good aspect of the planet Venus shining brightly during the mythic golden age of Saturn/Kronos. Hestia or Venus, was the light bearer and as goddess of hearth and home complimented Saturn/Kronos in a time of abundance. In her bad aspect, Venus/Hestia, was theorized to be a comet, and through her interactions with the planet mars wreaked havoc on earth. The “golden age” did not last forever, and when it ended it ended violently. The Myths describe a time when the gods went to war, but what observers on earth were seeing was upheaval in the heavens. Venus and Mars had moved out of their respective positions in the sky causing a disruption in the planetary alignment, a clash of the titans, and the fear of doomsday. What if the mythologies of our ancestors are nothing more than the dramatization of real world events? Only a few years in to this research and I am more convinced.. It was not until the arrival of our first civilizations did the “myths” we know today come to fruition. The archetypes created made it easier to pass along the story of the history of the world . Relative to today's planetary positioning, if the planets of our solar system did appear closer to the earth the myths would seem to be based in fact. in addition, having a story developed complete with good and bad aspects attached probably placed an everlasting sense of fear over the population. Creating the means for control, and Ideal for the priestly class of the day. With this in my mind it is not hard to imagine why the return to a “Golden Age” described by our forefathers would be held in such high regard. Whatever the true motivation behind the stories we still know as myth today it is clear that they continue to inspire our imagination. One of the reasons I will always continue to paint is an endless fascination I have with the inability to truly achieve what I’m trying to communicate visually. Not a sense of inadequacy, but an inner angst that develops with a hope that the unseen might reveal itself at any particular moment. Today we do our best with the written word to detail what we observe, but it will always be important to include the visual art in things as this will be the only way to see what is practically invisible to language. There was motivation with this painting to develop a new story from an established myth, and have that story become my own. The ability to establish a connection with your imagination should breed new ideas everyday and certainly I am inspired by the the myth makers and their creative ingenuity, no matter what their motives. I certainly gravitate towards a more positive stance regarding life and its challenges. I believe that good or love will always prevail over what could be considered evil. In the painting however, it is clear in Hestia’s eyes that there is always a challenge or evil to be dealt with on the horizon. Like the storytellers of the past around the world who used “myth” to articulate the story of upheaval in our ancient sky… I’m interested in a new mythology. A story that transcends time or place. a visual explanation of the world around us that could be viewed as unexpected or ironic, but always relevant.

Represented by the spectrum of Gray hiding among life’s black and white is the moment an individual comes to peace with that realization. There is a sense of enlightenment an individual can garner from knowing that there is simply too much to know, and not enough lifetimes to know it. Is there much more to it than this? Probably, but then we might certainly go about complicating things in a world already unwilling to divulge every secret under the sun. Wholeness, or the relationship an individual has with a combined synchronization of our physical and spiritual world to me, is the Gray. I feel comfortable living in an uncomfortable world. So be diligent, and mostly lazy on Saturday or Sunday, or both if you can afford it. Be protective of your personal space, and always friendly. Be a good speaker, and a great listener. Try to live well, and maybe even practice what you preach, but if you don’t like to practice or preach that’s fine too, just don’t harm others with your laziness. It often makes sense to think pragmatically, but you should always encourage people to pursue their passion as if their life depends on it. Don’t pretend to be someone you cannot be, and always admit that being someone takes help and with all your might learn to accept it. Know what its like to pursue the straight and narrow, but always walk without rhythm, Feel like you have a sense of your destination , and embrace the idea that you can never really predict the gray you’ll encounter in between. Is it real? Is it abstract? I don’t know, somewhere in between. After all, doesn’t art imitate life? Or is it life that imitates art? So think clearly….mostly, and gain Clarity…… clearly. Right?"

SOLD! ” I Have a Secret” 50×38 w/frame What secrets do we keep from our children? How important is it to communicate the realities of our world,…the structure of authority, its worldly expectations, the control mechanism, and a materialistic media. If the children are the future it is imperative to clue them in on life's challenges early in their lives, But at what cost? Is it worth trying to take in more information than it is possible for a child to process. I say no. This is a process that takes time. A process that can be quickened in the information age in which we live, but should not be rushed. In the painting a young girl appears to be dancing/strutting across the canvas towards a seated figure, and in the last snapshot of her movement bends down to share something with the seated character. What tales does she have to tell? What information has she been able to understand or master that provides her with such playful confidence? At what point is knowing too much a detriment to growing up. Technology has made it possible to find information with the click of a few buttons, re-create human experience via virtual reality, and provide a platform for young people to voice their opinions anonymously without consequence whether informed or not. There is too much information. An infinite amount of knowledge to decipher in a normal human life. Its not important to dwell on what else it is you need to know to understand the world around you. It is healthy to live in the here and now without the threat of feeling like you have to know everything. Know thyself, and thou shall know all the mysteries of the universe,…a phrase we first hear as part of the ancient mystery school. The experiences you have in your early to late youth gives you a better understanding of what information should be absorbed or deflected in the pursuit of truth. Growing up is not an experience that can be forced down your throat. It evolves over a period of years filled with challenges and experiences. The painting “I have a secret” is ironic to me. The girl who dances across the canvas could never know as much as she appears to think, and at what point does that ideal become detrimental to her as a person and effect how she interacts with the world around her.
